The Fairy and the Mermaid

Hazel had a great day today! She has become an eating machine. This morning she took her entire bottle! (30 ml) At 12:30 she took another bottle (34 ml). At 4:00, even though she was tired from all the eating, she took a third of her bottle. We decided to give her a break at her 7:00 feeding. This was not too upsetting for her. She spent the time laughing and playing with her Papa. At her 10:00 feeding, she pitched a big fit. Nothing would calm her down until she had her bottle. She woke up at 9:30 ready to eat and was not happy until she got her way. Now she is sleeping peacefully in her isolette. Today she weighs 3 lbs. 10 oz. It does look like she lost weight but she also received a new isolette today. The difference in her weight is probably due to this change. With all her feedings, she may start to lose a little weight for a while. Drinking from a bottle burns a lot of calories. After she has the hang of it, her weight will begin to increase again.

Cora had an ok day. She ate from a bottle two times today. The first time she finished her bottle. (40 ml) The second time she drank all but 10 ml. (30 ml) Anytime there is milk left over, it is fed to her by the feeding tube. She will always receive her full amount of milk. It just may be fed to her in different ways. Tonight she was too tired from her day to eat from a bottle. Around noon today, she was taken to radiology. Her urine culture from last week was positive for a UTI. The bacteria from this infection is different than the bacteria from the first infection. In order to rule out all possibilities, several tests were run today. The first was to put a dye or ink in a catheter. The dye shows the path her urine travels. The doctor wanted to make sure there was not anything structurally wrong. This test came back normal. The second test was an ultrasound on her kidneys. We are still waiting on the results. Another culture was taken as well as some blood work. All the results should be back in a couple of days. In the mean time, Cora is receiving an oral antibiotic two times a day. Again, this is just a precaution. She is not acting sick and her blood work from this morning is not showing any signs of an infection. We are just waiting. Cora also lost weight today, 3 lbs. 15 oz. Like Hazel, she also received a new isolette. The change in weight could be as simple as a new machine.
