The Fairy and the Mermaid

Both girls had their eye exams this morning.

Cora's eye have stayed the same. No progression is a good sign. She will be rechecked next Tuesday by the same doctor. They tried to get another urine culture today. She had two catheters. Both times it did not work. Cora does not like this procedure. She poops every time they try to get a sample, pees before it is over, then pushes out the catheter once it is in place. They are going to discuss another procedure tomorrow. We asked them to wait until Thursday to preform the next test. We feel she needs a day off to recoup. Today was not a great day. Cora was fussy and tired. She did take some milk from all her feedings. The last one she took over half. Tomorrow should be a day of rest with one test on Thursday. We will not know until tomorrow morning what the doctor decides. Her weight today was 4 lbs. 9.5 oz.

Hazel did not have as good a report from the eye doctor. Her left eye has stayed the same. Again, this is good news. Her right eye, however, has gotten a little worse. New blood vessels have started to grow. This is not devastating news, but it is not good news. The other eye specialist (a surgeon) will examine her tomorrow and handle her case from here on out. If there is something wrong, it has been caught early enough to prevent retinal detachment, or total blindness. She may have blind spots in her eye, a lazy eye, or vision problems. There really is no way to tell without giving her more time to heal. The specialist will determine the next course of action. With the eye exam today, she was very fussy. Feeding from a bottle was too much. She could not calm down long enough to get coordinated. Her last bottle, 12 hours after the exam, she was calm enough to take half her feeding. She only had one brady today. It was right after her exam while we were talking to the doctor. This is common. She wanted us to know she was very unhappy with what she had just been through. We are hoping for more optimistic news tomorrow. The specialist did not seem too worried last week. We hope this trend continues. Her weight today was 4 lbs. 2 oz.
