The Fairy and the Mermaid

Cora is doing great on her ad-lib feedings. This means her feeding tube has been removed. As long as nothing changes, it will stay out. She is still trying to get the hang of being in charge of when she eats. We had to wake her up tonight at her 9:00 feeding. She had been asleep for several hours. The nurse practitioner, Melanie, said this was a good sign. It means Cora is getting older and bigger. She will eat more milk, have longer time between meals, and sleep more. Her weight stayed about the same. All the extra eating is burning calories.

Hazel's weight also stayed about the same. She is also eating more, which burns more calories. Hazel decided today she was not going to let Cora get ahead. When their nurse, Therese, was feeding Cora, Hazel became very upset. She wanted food and she wanted it right then. To show her distress, she pulled her feeding tube out, held it in a fist, and shook it in the the air until she was acknowledged. They decided to leave it out and see how she did. Hazel did well for a couple of feedings. Her last feeding tonight took a lot of energy. She was tired from the day. Another feeding tube was put in just in case it will be needed later tonight. It will not be too far in the future before it is removed for good.
